Its not Easy to be a Job consultant

If you are a job consultant, you come across variety of people. Recently, a very weird thing happended to me..Let me share with you.

I was calling the candidates for some technical positions. As usual was going through the CVS and calling the candidates. After one hour when I was through with finding the relevant candidates, I got missed calls from a number. I thought some candidate may be calling me , so called him back. To my shock a lady spoke from other side and asking me who I am. I told her that I am a job consultant and asked the reason for which she is calling me.

She then asked me why I am calling his husband.?? I told her very clearly that its not her husband who I ma calling but was calling up the candidates for the job openings, and may be his husband would be one of them. Then she again asked me a idiotic question, how come I know her and her husband., so far being fed up of giving the reasons, I told her not to act as a stupid lady. I do not know her husband and was only calling him, if I would have that would be job opening.

The lady got more infuriated and shouted at me saying I should not dare to call her husband. I felt so irritated and wanted to scold her but she hang up the phone.

I couldnot understand why and how theses over possessive females let their husband do any kind of jobs.?

types of candidates

so far I have come across many job seekers and tried to categorize them in few below mentioned points.

Authoritative candidates- When they will call you , you get a feeling as if talking to your boss. Instead of requesting or asking they will order you.

over confident candidates- they will call the consultant for the job and ask the consultant to save his/ her number for  future refference of any job.

shy candidates- Either there mom, girlfriends or any other relative will call on their behalf. He may be educated and looking for job but would be very shy to call the consultant.

confused candidates- They will call you and ask you about any job openings..On being asked to be specific they will show their helplessness and keep on repeating their things only.

super fast candidates-These candidates are in really hurry..They will call you, inform that they have forwarded their CV and disconnect the phone. They will hardly bother to find out what is the result or tell their names even.

over active/ friendly candidates- They will all you and react as if they know you since childhood. They try to be frank and thus at times become irritating as well.

Funny incident in a consultant's life

I am a job consultant, Once I was calling up the heads of the companies for the business development and contacted President of one the MNC through Sms.

I never have the habbit of saving the numbers of the contacted person untill & unless I wont get any business from them. This is also because my nokia phone memory had very limited and moreover many times I forget by which name I have saved the numbers.

So I have given him the SMS about my company's interest for providing manpower to their organisation And forgot.

After half an hour, I got an SMS from an unknown number asking me to call him. I really got very angry thinking that any of my candidate is asking me to call him. In frustration I called him and started shouting that how dare you to ask me to call you. Its you who needs a job not me. You should have called me instead of asking me for the same. The person on other side hadnt uttered a word. After sometime he said I am Mr. XYZ. I was blank for few minutes as he is the same one whom I was SMSing. The President of the same MNC whom I messaged few minutes before and completely forget.

I waited for sometime and than msged him apologising for my behaviour and telling him why I have behaved so.

See its not easy to be consultant. Also friends I want to know what would you people have done if you were in my place..??

Post your answers in comment box please..

Being a consultant is not an easy job.

Now a days, if you are doing something to help people than many will try to misuse that help as well.

Well, being a job consultant, we have to put our name and number on various job portals. This give rise to uninvited messages and calls and that too mostly at nights. I have developed a loafer sense to tackle this kindda people. I will tell you few instances that happened with me. At times they have become ridiculous and at times humorous as well.

one day, I was getting continuous good morning and good night messages from a unknown number. I never bother about this kindda messages until and unless they start irritating me. Slowly the frequency of messages started increasing. Every now and than I use to get forwarded messages. That also not bothered me as my phone has lots of memory capacity and moreover these forwarded messages are useful as well. :P

But one night around 2:00PM i got a LOVe you message followed with "goodnyt jaan" and few hearts. This behaviour irritated me. Than again in the morning I got the same message, just it was saying "good morning jaan".

This increased my level of anger and infuriated me to the most. I quickly find out the name of that candidate from my job portals. The two mobile numbers were given there. I thought of trying the other number(as one was the number from which I was getting messages). A lady from some remote area of Gujarat picked up my call. I told her that your son Jeetendra is messaging me and I am a married lady.. ask him not to message me or otherwise I will file a complain against him.

the lady: tu ruk tu ruk..mai abhi jeetendra ko bulati hu..(she than shouts- hea jeetendra ek chori keh rahi hai ki tu use message kar raha hai.. le baat kar). The guy comes and pick up the phone.

He was not talking to me but I could hear the shouting and Jeetendra being abused by her mother.. I wish I could see his beatings as well. After shouting for few minutes..haan kar diye message to?? bola na galti hogai..bola na..

and than suddenly phone becomes not reachable. I tried to reach both the numbers but both were not reachable.

I think that Aunty has broke both the phones :P.

interview tips

Face to face interview is the main selection criteria for any of the position. Here are few tips that should be keep in mind while facing any interview:

1. Always carry your latest CV or bio data- May be you have already forwarded your CV or that has been selected still prefer to carry a copy of it. It not only complete the look but also gives an insight how perfect/ eagerly looking for a job change.

2. Be confident: It does not mean that you have to look super confident or over confidence. Even at times I lack confidence but a level of confidence should be maintained.. It should not look like you are facing an interview which is not up to your level.

3. Sit straight- make sure while giving an interview you are sitting straight

4. Start with greetings- No matter in how much hurry you or the interviewer is, always greet the interviewer.

5. Hand movements- few hand movements are ok but don't over do them. Pointing a finger is seriously no.

6. Be on time: Punctuality always counts. those who are not punctual are not serious about their work. If somehow you are getting late than inform the interviewer or the consultant and also apologies for it.

7. Formal Dress code: try to be in formals or semi formals. Don't try out informal clothes for the interview.

Please mind your language

Language plays a vital role in searching job to getting job. Being a job consultant, I mainly evaluate on the basis of his use of words and the technique of speaking. As mostly, the first impression of any candidate that I get is from the telephone calls only. With this I do not mean that you should be speaking fluent English or English with a ascent but prefer a decency while speaking to someone. The few important points that should be kept in mind while speaking for Job:

1. Whosoever you are talking to should be addressed properly, Means either use the greetings like Sir/ Mam or if you are calling them by their names than it should be properly pronounced. f somehow you are not sure about their name than try to skip it instead of taking any wrong name.

2. Use the language you are comfortable with. Its not necessary that you should be speaking only English. Hindi is our mother tongue and you should not ashamed to use it if you can use it more easily than English.

3. Avoid using slang or being more friendly. It is always said that keep professionalism separate from personal thing. Even if you know that person personally than also while talking about jobs your wprds should be limited and professional.

4. If you find the person not taking any interest in listening to what you are saying than its better to cutt off your story.

Important Advice: Be polite, concise and clear

advantages/ disadvantages of being a job consultant

I do not know why people think that job consultant do have all kind of job related to all kinds of profile and that too for all kinds of candidates. I am into this profession since last 7 or 8 years. I am doing this because love to talk to people and help them and me in a way.

Everyone when get to know that I am a job consultant or the one who help people in getting jobs, their respect for me increases many folds. But simultaneously their expectations also increases. They want or suggest my number to any of their near or dear ones, assuring them that I would be great help as they know me.

Also, candidates think being a consultant means I do not have any personal life. I am available 24*7 for their help. As soon as they get to know about any job opening from my side they can call me, even if it is 12:30 in the night. Being a girl many search for their prospective girl friend in me or many try to comment on my whatsapp as if they know me since ages.

I love my job but at times the candidates make it worse for me. They are unable to understand that I also get tired. Irrelevant calls, messages, or expectations make it tough task for me.

Important Advice: you will yourself get a call or message if the consultant has job relevant to you.

Check list while going for an interview

Many times while we re ready for n interview we make some mistake or forget something necessary which make us loose our confidence. Here is the checklist that enables face your interview with confidence.

Resume

Always carry a copy of your updated resume. It completes your look. A copy of resume make you look more professional.

Formal Dressing

Always dress up to your best. For females, use light make up. going like a plane Jane is not preferable in now a days MNC culture. But remember whatever you are wearing, should not contradict with formal dress code. Though I asked you to dress comfortably and be at your best.

Coordination with Consultant

If your interview has been scheduled through an consultant so its better to be in good terms with him/her. do inform your consultant about time to reach, message once there you are in company and also inform your consultant, once you are through with interview. Request him to take the feedback.

Punctuality

Try to be punctual. and in case if there is any emergency , do inform your consultant or the interviewer about your position.

Points to remember while making a resume

Resume is the first impressionary document while searching for a job. Many candidates think it as a useless and waste of time, but let me tell you very clearly that we consultant call only those candidates whose resumes are relevant to our client's requirements. Suppose, if my client wants a male candidate who is B.tech(civil) and have erection experience than I will never call anyone who has not mentioned erection as a job responsibility. Obviously, time is money and why to waste time. We consultants hardly believe in trial and error method. Resume has to be perfect.

So what are the things that you should remember while making your resume. I am outlining few of the points that grasp my attention while searching for any resume.

Objective:

The objective of the candidate should be very clearly mentioned. no one like to have jack of all trades. Candidates should mention the skills that they are proficient into and the objective should define it very well.

Details:

Even a single detail like your contact number, address, age, job period should be properly checked before forwarding the CV. These details matter a lot.

Company:

Its may be possible tat HR /consultant is not aware about the company that you have worked with or working with. May  be the that's the thing he/she is looking for .Therefore always write a line or two about the company profile.

Authenticity:

Details that you have mentioned should be authentic. there is no space for cheating or forgery. Only 10% are able to get success in hiding the real facts.

Irrelevant facts:

One of the candidate has mentioned in his resume that he stood second in fifth standard. Do tell me what is the use of mentioning this thing. Please try not to mention any irrelevant facts.

Email Id:

Keep a email id. which looks professional. One of my candidate got rejected in an It company because of his email Id. Funny and surrealistic email ids are sure shot  "NO".

Here is the sample resume that I uploaded from google.com. Look at its formatting and the headlines. It defines everything in best and simple way. In case any of you wants to get their resume updated or any kind of consultancy help can contact us at alleventplanners@gmail.com. we will surely try to do the needful.

Resume/ CV/ Biodata

Usually  we confuse a Resume with a Biodata or CV. There is a big difference between all the three terms. Though all three are meant to showcase your abilities and your qualification, and due to lack of knowledge all the three terms are being used interchangeably but here is huge difference between the three.

The very basic difference between the three is that

1. A resume is written when one has certain amount of experience in professional life and a lot of references to give.

2. A CV on the other hand will be given typically by a fresher whose professional experience is almost zero and the only reference s/he can give is that of professors who taught him/her

3. A Bio-data will contain more of personal information than professional.this document is usually circulated for marriage purpose.
Things like caste, permanent address, skin color, ht etc will be typically included in a Bio data.

International firms tend to favour the CV over resume because they generally want to know as much information as they can before having people travel for an interview or even having to find out the hard way whether somebody is well or ill suited to living abroad.

Human resource- Right candidate at right job

Human resource is about placing the right candidate at right job. It includes a series of steps. Its scope is not only limited to placing the candidates but also continues thereafter.

My aim for this post is to outline and later categorically define(in my future posts)  the each step related to human resource which is of use of every employee and employer. Obviously HR is much more vast than what I have pointed but I tried more to focus on the more general issues. and my future posts will be linked to these points.

  1. Job Selection
  2. Resume Making
  3. applying to the jobs
  4. interview skills
  5. negotiations
  6. joining the company
  7. behaviors in the company
  8. dealing with the boss
  9. being a team member
  10. how to deal with the negativity

Through my blog I want to help my candidates, friends and those who are searching for job. My idea is not to post something which is for HRs only but also can be used by freshers as well as experienced  candidates.
